Welcome Back to the Sixties: East Providence High School Revives 'Hairspray'

The high school's musical theater group will perform the show starting March 31.

The sixties are alive and well, as the East Providence High School Musical Theatre Group has started rehearsals for its production of the musical Hairspray. Based on the 1988 John Waters film, Hairspray is the story of Tracy Turnblad, a “pleasantly plump” teenage girl living in Baltimore in 1962. Her main ambition is to be a dancer on The Corny Collins Show (think American Bandstand). Hairspray is a fun show, but it also has deep messages about diversity and equality during a pivotal time in American history. In the musical, the African-American teens are only allowed to dance on The Corny Collins Show once a month on “Negro Day.” Tracy befriends some of these teens and longs for a day when “every day was Negro Day.” With the help of her …

Vampire Love Returns Next Week

East Bay Players are presenting a special, one-night-only presentation of Nightsong - A New Vampire Musical Dec. 13 as a fundraiser for the company's upcoming season.

The lights go down, and as you sit in the darkness, the orchestra strikes an ominous chord, playing a musical theme with strong elements of pop and rock. Soon after, the orchestra is joined by a choir, adding more depth with their haunting vocals. It's not the Trans-Siberian Orchestra – it's the overture to Nightsong – A New Vampire Musical. Nightsong is an original musical, based on the 1996 concept EP album Trilogy of Nightsongs: A Romantic View of Vampires by singer and songwriter Kari Tieger, who lives in Riverside.
