  • On the article Resident Says Billboards Violate City Ordinance

Billboards in the residential neighborhoods of Newport are unnecessary eyesores. There are several in the Fifth Ward and they are just plain ugly. Ask yourself: what would the residents of the Point or the Historic Hill say if someone in those neighborhoods decided to put up some billboards on their vacant lot? Yeah right. And you thought the wailing and screaming over Queen Anne Square was bad. I mean jeez, even Middletown had the good sense to take down the billboards on E. Main Rd. that were a pox on an otherwise beautiful piece of land. Good luck to Mr. Jacobsen. I hope he prevails.

Women wearing lots of makeup make me think they're trying to hide something, or be somthing they're not. Women are just fine the way they are, and I know this sounds trite, but to me a beautiful woman is one who's confident, capable, smart, and cares about the people around her. I couldn't care less how old you are or how much you weigh.

Don't even get me going on plastic surgery...

My top ten: The food in each of these is delicious, the service is excellent.
    1. Clark Cooke House (But not in the summer. Tourist throngs make it tough to enjoy.)
    2. TSK (Three words. chocolate chip cookies.)
    3. Castle Hill (To impress your friends from out of town, but bring lots of money.)
    4. White Horse (Eat in the bar. nice fireplace, less expensive than the dining room.)
    5. Fluke (Again, better in the off season. Bar on the top floor is not to be missed at sunset. )
    6. Rhumb Line (quiet and out of the way)
    7. Salvation (always an interesting, diverse crowd)
    8. Pour Judgement (also gets crowded, but at least you know who these people are.)
    9. Benjamin's (way better than you'd expect, and they serve till midnight.)
    10. SALAS' !!! (Sad face...)

  • On the article LETTER: The Inequity and the Injustice of the Proposed Sakonnet Bridge Toll

As someone who crosses the Newport bridge quite frequently, I have a couple of observations. If paying a toll to maintain a bridge is such an evil, unjust, and inequitable thing, why isn't STOP protesting all tolls on all bridges? The whole premise seems disingenuous.

Second it is misleading to imply that toll money would be pumped into some politician's pocket in Providence. Bottom line, if RITBA is managing the bridge, money collected will be used to maintain the bridges. RITBA runs a tighter operation than DOT, and I trust them more than I trust DOT or the clowns on Smith Hill. Also everyone makes it sound like it will four bucks to cross. It will probably be less, and for locals, it will very likely be much, much less. If paying 83 cents to cross a bridge is too much, you can cross it less often, car pool, ride your bike in good weather, or take a bus. It is NOT the end of the world.

Finally most of what I hear from the anti-toll crowd is "No tolls for us, at all, ever, period. I should not have to pay for anything." I think your cause would find a more sympathetic reception if STOP and the rest came together and got behind a workable, equitable way to pay for your shiny new bridge.

Bad idea. It represents a potential conflict of interest. The items (or funds from selling them) should go to a randomly selected, approved community organization that has no connection whatsoever to the police or the state.

What gives with those billboards on Wellington Ave. across from the Hibernian Hall, at Thames and Narragansett, and at the Thames end of Morton Ave. They've been there forever, yet I can't imagine that the advertisements they display produce enough revenue to justify their existence. They are a pox on an otherwise pleasant neighborhood. If you tried to put something like that up on the Historic Hill or the Point, the city council would shoot it down in two seconds. They got rid of the billboards on West Main Rd in Middletown at Oliphant Ln. BECAUSE THEY WERE UGLY. Too bad Newport city council can't do the same for us.

It's too bad that his baseball career didn't turn out the way we had all hoped, but for years now Ryan has shown incredible dedication, self discipline, and resiliency. Those qualities were not diminished by the surgery. He's going to excel at whatever he does. Good luck Ryan Westmoreland!

I'm with you. We've become a bunch of babies. And after last month's snow storm, if I ever hear the term "hunker down" again, I'm gonna scream.
