Riverside War Memorial Monument Gets Fresh Start

After graffiti and skateboarding tarnished Riverside's WWII Monument, the East Providence Battle Monument Foundation has restored the site.

Riverside's World War II monument was given a freshly-updated look recently, thanks to the hard and thoughtful work of the East Providence Battle Monument Foundation (EPBMF). Where once sullied the reflective sit, now sits polished new fixtures agains the East Bay Bike Path.

To members of the EPBMF, the work of caring for the city's monuments and the memories of the heroes they immortalize are one in the same. On Oct. 10, John Rebello continued the non-profit's work by cleaning the Civil War memorial near City Hall on Taunton Ave. The list of accomplishments extends to the gates of Pierce Field, as well. Two bronze plaques listed at the athletic complex immortalize some 2,000 individuals who died in the war.

In the case of Riverside's monument, masonry work, lighting replacement, landscaping and iron work have been completed to properly honor America's Greatest Generation.

The Riverside Monument's improvements cost a total of $3,000, money raised through donations. For the organization's principal organizer, Glenn Maciel, this fact is one that produces a desire for gratitude and transparency.

"All of the people who donated [to us], this is where your money went," said Maciel.

In the past the group has accepted legislative grants and pursued fundraising. Maciel personally mans a booth at the Heritage Festival to accept donations and spread awareness for the cause of restoration, protection and appreciation of the city's war monuments.

Beyond the tangible results of citywide restorations and upkeep, Maciel is adamant about informing potential donors of how wisely their money will be used.

"We have no payroll, we're all volunteer," he said. "We have two expenses, corporate filing and a post office box."

Maciel says the EPBMF is still in the process of developing a website which will provide interested residents with well-rounded information about the sites they care for and they work they do.
